Keratoconus
What is Keratoconus?
Characteristic for keratoconus is a uneven cornea thickness throughout the eye's surface. If the cornea gets too thin in certain areas, it can lead to swelling, damaged and blurry vision, and rarely even tearing. One of the first symptoms of this are blurry vision, which is why it shouldn't be underestimated. A cornea damaged on this scale can lead to the eye being very sensitive to direct light and reflections, which is very constraining for everyday life.
Vision deteriorates gradually with keratoconus and can develop unnoticed for a very long time, so prevention is important. As a rule, it begins to appear in people between the ages of 10 and 25, a typical sign is mistaking letters and numbers (3 for 8, E and F, etc.) or regular eye pain, which we can mistakenly attribute to e.g. fatigue. Heredity, stress, lifestyle, or excessive sunlight can contribute to its formation.
Keratoconus is our specialty. Although the disease still cannot be completely cured, with early diagnosis it can be alleviated very well with the help of the most modern methods. Slit-lamp examination, autorefractorkeratometer and keratograph help us with this. Keratoconus is most often treated with an optical aid called a hard contact lens, which partially balances the shape of the keratoconus cornea. It is specially made for each patient and, despite its small diameter, ensures a high quality of vision. Tears have a good replacement under hard contact lenses, thanks to which their lifespan increases up to 1-2 years and their maintenance requirements are reduced. Hard contact lenses can be worn daily, even for more than 10 hours, and are used for any irregular shape of the cornea.
At Lens Optik de Rossi, we work with the healthiest material on the market, which is made in Switzerland. In our lens center, we will teach you how to apply a hard contact lens and how to care for it. With us, your eyes are in the right hands.
